The Wardrobe Shrink October Newsletter October 12, 2005 |
|||
Hello and welcome to the October issue of The Wardrobe Shrink Newsletter. ![]() What's NewNews Dates for London/Amsterdam New Website look It has been a few months since my last newsletter, as there have been some changes! We have moved from the west coast to the east coast to Georgia. Georgia is just above Florida, home to Savannah and seeped in British history, with a great climate and luckily just out of reach of the hurricanes. We have bought a new home that is the price of a stamp compared to London prices and are enjoying renovating the 1930's features and sitting amid the infamous tall pines and palms in our garden. From an image standpoint, I have learnt a lot about applying style to your home as we have been redecorating. Firstly, you can upgrade your look by accessorising with quality pieces, and so too can you upgrade your home. We took what looked like a run down bathroom in dire need of a revamp and instead of pulling all the tiles out and starting over, we instead replaced the sink and 'upgraded' all the faucets, and with a good scrape and clean of all the tiles, we now have an art deco looking 1930's bathroom that looks very stylish and expensive. Secondly, this also reinforces for me the key message of my work. Using the original features is the best way. Most people want to revamp themselves and go to great lengths to achieve this. But you already have the 'original' foundations there, it is only a matter of making the most of them and highlighting your unique qualities. Last time I was in the UK I was horrified to see this new show '10 years younger'. I nearly fell off the couch as Nikki came to see me about four years ago for advice as she was planning to start a business - Tramp to Vamp - and was looking for some input. So when I turned on the TV to discover she had her own show suggesting people have cosmetic surgery and that the whole idea was to look ten years younger I was disheartened to say the least. A woman with true style and positive self-image knows how to value her age and sees her age as one of her greatest assets. She also understands that beauty isn't something that stops once you hit a certain age, but is something that continues as you age. You don't have to go backwards in time to be beautiful, but instead move forward and 'ripen' beautifully. "No matter what our age or condition, there are still untapped possibilities within us and new beauty waiting to be born." - Dale E. Turner. The women in Georgia certainly dress their age. It shocked me the other day to find myself in a queue at the Cinema amongst teenage girls that were wearing all the latest fashions, and feeling that my wardrobe wasn't far removed from theirs. Having lived in London and San Francisco, it is common place to find a fifteen year old and a fifty year old wearing the same Juicy sweatsuit/tracksuit. After all, they are all following the latest fashions. But then a Georgian woman of a maturer age walked past me in the queue and suddenly you could separate the girls from the true women. She looked 'together', intelligent, knowledgeable and perfectly comfortable in her own skin and it would have seemed preposterous and even condescending to even suggest to her that she should be wearing a Juicy tracksuit or a skinny pair of jeans with slouched boots. Now just to be clear I was not wearing either of these, and I am not saying that either are wrong, but in that moment more than ever before it became clear to me that fashion is very ageist, and is not allowing us to age fairly. In fact, looking fashionable can make us look older. The intention behind my work is that your style and your blueprint/foundations are the most important ingredients, and to remain 'current' or in keeping with the trends is the extra condiment. You then avoid the whole aspect of fashion aging you and you can grow into your 'own' style. Once in a while you need a little reminder though of your age, and a reminder if you are becoming a fashion victim rather than being just current. If you are representing yourself correctly, then your style never ages. I have included in this newsletter the hot trends of the season. Again, trends can be added to your Image. Some Image Types can maximise fully on the trends if they are a replication of their own look. I have also included in ASK SARAH a question on how to look like a grown-up, which I think is quite apt. Trip to London/Amsterdam I am intended to be back in London in Mid November and will be available for consultations. Anyone interesting in having some time with me, please let me know as soon as. I also want to visit clients in Amsterdam so if you are interested please let me know as soon as possible so that I can make this trip possible. If you have any questions, comments, suggestions please contact me. New Website Look My website is being revamped in keeping with my growing image and age! I feel it now reflects the more psychology and intuitive aspects of my work. ![]()
Trends Autumn/Winter 2005Your image can be complemented with the Fashions of the Season. An underlying theme for this season is Britishness: the NEW MOD look or 'Beatnik' as the press are calling it and LEADING LADY. Again, we have the Boho influences from earlier this year, but with more class and romance - RUSSIAN PEASANT and BAROQUE. The cultural influence is from the South American trails, INCA. Summary: NEW MOD Fitted, neat,beatnik. Short cropped jackets, skinny jeans, sixties prints, black and white. Film: Quadrophenia. Best impersonator: Kate Moss Best contribution: Skinny jeans are now making a comeback and it has been a few seasons now that we have seen them edging into our stores. The bootcut jean looks like it may be on the way out for good, replaced by the skinny and the straight. The skinny can fit into anyone's wardrobe whether under a dress, under a pair of slouched boots or with a classic heel. This look seems to be the strongest this season, with echoes of Andy Warhol. Image Types: Glam Rock - wear a heel; Trixie Pixie - use the patterns; French Chic - short jackets; Quirky - mix the patterns. Read the rest of the article to learn more about all the trends this season. Ask Sarah"I'm a mother and I'm 21 years old. I'm happy with my job and most things in my daily life. But one thing keeps giving me problems. I'm not happy with my looks and wardrobe. Some people think I'm 18 years old because of my looks and I have a child so it makes me insecure about myself. People notice and respond to this too. Can I look like a mother as well as a girl, myself? That would open a whole new world for me and I think more people will have confidence in me!" Marjolijn Being young and looking young are two separate things. And some of us just always have a young look no matter how old we actually are. However, this is one of your greatest assets. But how do you dress your youthfulness while at the same time feel like you are an adult? Read the full answer to Marjolijn's question
