Invest in a Vest The vest was introduced as a new form of dress for men by King Charles II of England in 1666, and is often referred to as a waistcoat as it is cut at the waist. To start with, the vest was worn in all styles – single and double breasted and bright colours, then it became part of the formal business suit later on, when it was worn to match the colour of the suit. Although not worn as often in business these days, you will still see some bankers sporting the waistcoat as it represents the most formal and authoritative attire. In the 1970’s, it had an iconic moment with John Travolta on the dance floor - his infamous white disco suit, and has recently become a trend as a more stylish fashion suit, sported by the likes of David Beckham. The vest crossed over into high street fashion in the last century, and musicians and artists today can often be seen wearing a waistcoat over a shirt with jeans. Women started wearing them too, Diane Keaton and Whoopi Goldberg set the trend early on. This season, men’s tailoring for women is one of the looks, and so it makes sense that the vest is also on the catwalk; Angelina Jolie and Fergie have sported it already this week. The item is a classic, and if you invest in one that fits your personality, then it is a timeless piece that you can keep in your wardrobe. However, here are some ideas on how you can incorporate the vest into your wardrobe for this season.
Quaint Delicate and feminine, this look is less about men’s tailoring and more about women’s. Including some of the romantic styles of the 80’s, and the quaint styles of the 30’s, this vest is neatly fitted to reflect the shape of a bodice, and worn with a frilly blouse. Funky The satin look is much more disco, funky, and cool. It can be worn with just a simple tee and is buttoned low at the waist. Single breasted and relaxed, you can wear this with a pair of jeans and ballet flats, or for evening in one block of colour with a jacket and classic pair of tailored trousers. This isn’t so much an authority piece, but more a glam modern look. Celebrity match: Lindsay Lohan for casual. Lux Croupier at UrbanOutfitters $48 ( one has just opening up at St Johns, Jax)
Artsy Art Deco and the flash flapper styles of the 20’s are ‘in’ this season. Stars and moons were motifs of that period, and are featured in silver shimmer sequins on this sharp showgirl vest. Great for adding sparkle and life to an evening out. Wear with sailor buttoned pants or a skinny jean and heel. Celebrity match: Sarah Jessica Parker Kimichi Luna vest at UrbanOutfitters $78
Casual Boxy, textured or with weave (e.g. herringbone), patch pockets andbrass buttons, this casual look is much more gamine and less about cool. This look was popular in the 90’s (a bit of grunge) and more country than city. Wear with square tee and cords. Celebrity match: Meg Ryan XOXO at Macys$33
Classic A simple, tailored wool vest, buttoned up high (3 buttons). Adds authority to your look and a replacement to a jacket. Can be worn over a plain shirt, simple knit, and with a skirt or trouser. Wear for work and give yourself that extra layer of armor.
