White not Black!
18 March 2006 - Savannah Morning News
From city to city – Paris, Milan, Amsterdam, London, and San Francisco – I have noticed a common theme in women's fashion – the colour black! Many women, whatever their style, rely on black as a staple element of their wardrobe. And even in sunny South Georgia! But, thankfully, this season brings a refreshing change with white and the lightest neutrals dominating the trends. We can at last give up our obsession with black. One should bear in mind that, unlike black, white is a complicated colour. Black comes in three options – blue black, green black and yellow black. Most people don't notice the difference, except for when they try to match their blacks together. White is a different story altogether. It has a variety of hues, and you need to match the lighter colours with your skin tone; otherwise, they could leave you looking too pale or pasty. Here are the key whites of this season with their corresponding skin tones: • Stark White is best suited to cooler skin tones, those with medium to dark hair and fair skin or the darkest black complexion. Celebrity: Liv Tyler • Nude is best suited to warmer skin tones, those with light to medium blondes or reds with honey skin tones or dark hair and coffee skin tones. Celebrity: Naomi Watts. • Pale Rose, Jade or Blue is best suited to darker hair and olive or cocoa skin tones. Celebrity: Penelope Cruz Best white item of the season: Isaac Mizrahi white cotton jacket at Target Some of you may be panicking about the thought of adorning yourself with lighter colours. But do not fear! White and tints are actually more flattering. Black draws the attention to your body, whereas white lifts the attention to your face. The lights show off your tan and skin tone, and they are much easier to complement with other colours, whereas black can create such a contrast and exaggerate your complexion. Ultimately, softer colours are more feminine and with The Dress making a comeback, the woman can show herself in her full glory. No more hiding out in black!
