Winter Warmers

With the recent chilly nights and thanksgiving around the corner, you now need to start building your coat wardrobe, and this season you have a great choice of styles and cuts. The fem look continues to dominate this season’s trends with skirted styles, pleats, and volume, but the other extreme is also ‘in’ vogue with bold metallic, edgy cut, and the masculine trench. Whatever your personality, you can find a coat that will express who you are. Here are some ideas to help you find the right coat that will last beyond this season.

Chic

Bright colours, neat, and short, the Chic styles have a little‘je ne sais quoi’, i.e. some coquette detail that takes the style from boring to fun. Wear with your skinny jeans, leggings, or mini dress, and ankle boots. Celebrity match: Hilary Duff

Kimchi & Blue Ruffle coat $140 Urbanoutfitters.com

Men's Cut

Angular, belted, and traditional prints are the attributes of the more masculine look. The trench is a popular cut this season for all styles, but this traditional look is more in keeping with the original use of the trench. Wear with bootcut dark denim and a classic riding style boot. Celebrity Match: Anne Curry.

Feminine

Skirted, pleated, delicate, pretty, the feminine trends dominate the high street. Wear with the pretty dresses, frilly shirts, and feminine high heels. The swing coat also works well if you are expecting, as it gives you some space for expansion. Celebrity Match: Calista Flockhart.

Or Erin Fetherston Wool Coat with Hearts $89.99 Target

Avant-Garde

Bold necklines, large pockets, extreme details, lamé andpatent, these coats certainly make a statement. Wear with simple black tailored pieces and opaque tights, bringing all the attention to the coat. This way you can afford to make the coat a pricey and luxurious item. Celebrity match: Angelina Jolie.

Diane Von Furstenberg Jim Coat $950 Nordstrom

Touchy Feely

Velvet is a key fabric trend this season. This velvet trenchincorporates two key looks – the fabric and the belted cut. Fur trims and large jacquard prints are also a feature, bringing some exotic to your wardrobe. Wear with your favourite jeans, a long skirt, and a Frye boot. Celebrity match: Catherine Zeta Jones.

Gallery Velvet Trench $138 Nordstrom

Flounce

Feminine volume deserves its own category. Romantic, poetic, creative is the theme of these sculpted but flowing styles. You feel like you are putting on a dress rather than a coat with the supple fabrics and the way the coat moves with your body. Rather than belting up in a trench and bracing yourself for the cold air, you feel like you haven’t got an outer garment on at all. Wear with a shift dress and opaque tights, skinny jeans, and ballet flats. Celebrity match: Ashley Olsen.

Tracy Reese Plenty Coat $375 Nordstrom
